The Weekend Set: Week 8

Week 8 College Baseball Recap, A new #1, A&M might be back, and more!

Recap

We have a new number one team in the country, the Arkansas Razorbacks take the top spot this week, and we had another weekend full of madness and upsets.

#1 Tennessee drops the the weekend to what appears to be a resurgent Texas A&M team. The Vols no-hit the Aggies on Friday, but A&M would punch back on Saturday sweeping a double header in Knoxville to get their lick back from the National Championship a year ago. This may just be the turning point for the Aggies, it’ll be a long road to get there but they could be this years’ Florida.

Texas played host to #3 Georgia where they would hold one of the best offenses in the country to eight total runs en route to a 3-0 sweep. Max Weiner appears to have solidified his spot as a top three pitching coach in the country.

LSU traveled to Norman to take on the #11 Sooners, where they would pick up a sweep. Kade Anderson threw a complete game shut out on Friday out lasting one of the best arms in the 2025 draft class in Kyson Witherspoon. While the Tigers still look to play a complete weekend of baseball where all the talent is firing on all cylinders, they continue to win ball games.

Oregon State took on one of the best mid majors in the country in UC Irvine, after dropping game one, the Beavers would handle business in Corvallis to get back on track after a bad series loss at Nebraska last week.

Auburn and Alabama faced off in a big time rivalry and ranked series, where the Tigers would take two-of-three. An extremely surprising result as the Crimson Tide looked like they were starting to hold true as a top 10 team. I am not sure if this is a testament to Auburn or the potential struggles to come for Alabama, but this was the most interesting result of the weekend

Wake Forest showed out after a slow start to ACC play with a 2-1 series victory over the Florida State Seminoles, finishing it off with a win by way of run-rule. Still some consistency problems with the Demon Deacons, they’re one of the toughest teams in the country when things are going well.

Western Kentucky cracks our top 25 after taking two-of-three at former #10 Dallas Baptist, the Hilltoppers continue their run at being one of the best pitching staffs in the country. Not a team I’d want to see some June.

Hawai’i and Southern Miss drop out of the rankings this week with series losses to Long Beach State and Marshall. A tough weekend for a pair of teams we love here at BSGB Media, we anticipate both getting back on track over the coming week.

Top-25:

Climbing the Ladder

Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers have ranked in the top five of most pitching stats through the season so far, their ability to hit the road and take a series against #10 Dallas Baptist is a testament to what this team can do. Led by Jack Bennett and Drew Whalen on the mound, and Ryan Wideman at the dish, there are plenty of weapons for this team to stay hot.

Texas: The Longhorns had a huge week holding down a high-powered #3 Georgia offense down for three games allowing just eight runs over the weekend. Capping it off with a walkoff home run on Sunday, Coach Schloss has already put his stamp on the season as Texas looks like a legitimate Championship contender right now.

Vanderbilt: Despite the questions we have surrounding the Commodores offense, they continue to win ball games. It’s tough to be out on a team that simply finds ways to win, and that’s what Vandy does. They’ll take on #15 Oklahoma next week in another big test to see if they are a legit contender this year.

Slump Alert

Georgia: We discussed in depth that the way for Georgia to win would be to score a ton of runs when they traveled into Austin. The Bulldogs only scraped across eight runs over the weekend and were swept at the hands of the Longhorns. The pitching was still very solid, but a disappointing weekend at the plate.

Southern Miss: The Golden Eagles had an extremely tough week dropping a series to a below average Marshall team. Despite their quality wins, there have been teams in the country that have been better of late and dropped out of our top 25 this week.

Tennessee: After no-hitting Texas A&M on Friday, I was under the impression that both the Aggies were dead, and Tennessee would steam roll them all weekend. Well, the Aggies bounce back for their first SEC series win over the consensus #1 team in the country and capped it off with a run-rule win over the Vols.
