The Weekend Set: Week 9

Week 9 College Baseball Recap

Recap

Another chaotic weekend in college baseball, because why not? It’s just been the MO of the 2025 College Baseball Season to this point.

LSU traveled to Auburn to take on the Tigers, where Auburn would hold down the LSU offense to just eight runs in the series and take them down via the sweep. Auburn has slowly showed they are a premier program in the country and their sights may be adjusting to Omaha.

Arkansas traveled to Athens in their first week as the #1 team in the country to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. Not only was this an incredible series, but a great showing for Georgia getting a huge start from Kolten Smith who can be an X-Factor for their pitching staff down the stretch. The Dawgs would take the series 2-1 thanks to an extra-inning win on Sunday in the rubber match in walk off fashion.

Tennessee traveled to Oxford to take on a red hot Ole Miss club, and again, another fantastic series. The Vols would come out with a series win, but if this weekend proved anything, it’s that anybody can win both the SEC, and the National Championship.

Oklahoma and Vanderbilt faced off in what felt like a must-win for both teams to show they can compete with the top teams in the country. The Vanderbilt offense didn’t show up and the Sooners took the series. If anything, it further confirmed our suspicions on the Commodores that the offense can’t consistently perform against top competition.

West Virginia continues to quietly have one of the best seasons in the country, and despite an unimpressive strength of schedule, it’s difficult to argue a 30-4 record with their only Big 12 loss coming from a Top 10 team in Arizona.

North Carolina had a huge weekend against Wake Forest, with Friday and Saturday’s wins coming by way of run-rule and finishing off the sweep with a 3-2 win. The Tar Heels offense has added another big layer with Gavin Gallaher heating up at the dish who now has five home runs in his last six games, and will be a massive part of their success if he can add that slug to the lineup.

Top-25:

Climbing the Ladder

Auburn: With constant questions around the Tigers pitching staff, they went to work against LSU holding them to just eight runs in a weekend sweep. The Tigers have started to solidify their position as a premier program this season.

TCU: Sitting now at 28-9, the Horned Frogs seemed to have found their footing after a few rough weeks. They took on Kansas, who was arguably the hottest team in the Big 12 coming into this weekend, and they’d clean sweep the Jayhawks in Fort Worth.

West Virginia: With an impressive 30-4 record, and just one Big 12 series loss at the hands of #11 Arizona, it’s time the Mountaineers found their way into the rankings. Quite honestly, another team that hasn’t really played top competition this year, but it’s really tough to ignore that record with the one “blemish” being against a Top 15 team.

Slump Alert

Vanderbilt: Vandy has been a tough team to pin down this season, and their struggles against better competition has been very concerning. It’s tough to knock a team that wins all the games they’re supposed to, but they don’t do much more than that, showing that in a series loss at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Alabama: A rough week for the Crimson Tide, dropping a series to a very shaky Mississippi State team, but picked up some slack thanks to a win vs Southern Miss in the midweek. We still really like this Bama squad but certainly didn’t have their best stuff against the Bulldogs.

LSU: It sounds insane to call a 31-6 team fraudulent, but we are certainly approaching concerned territory for the Tigers. They’ve had weekend series’ against three ranked opponents this season, and are 4-5 with only won weekend win in those. Yes, they dominated the non-conference schedule, but how can this team hold up against the top talent?
